In the next one year, the tenure of Dr. Rahman Mimiko will expire. Already, preparations are on top gear to celebrate the third year anniversary of the Mimiko led administration and by November 2012, the gubernatorial election of the state will be conducted.
Political climate in Ondo state is yet unpredictable. While some believe Mimiko is deep in pocket and AC N too will be out with its newly acquired political gladiators to wrestle power from the Labour party.
The administration of Mimiko came on board on February 2009 and was reported to have enjoyed support across board. People of the state were filled with high hopes and expectation that Dr. Mimiko will perform excellently.
With the expectation and wide jubilation of the people, it was extremely difficult for anyone to see any political party thriving in the state as Labor Party was claiming dominance of the political scene of the state.
Three years after, the political trend in Ondo state have changed the once promising Labour Party is gradually becoming a shadow of itself. While the Labour Party keeps loosing its members, PDP remain stagnant and A C N is rising in membership and popularity.
In the last one year, the mass influx into the Action Congress of Nigeria by the political stalwarts of the Peoples’ Democratic Party and the ruling Labor Party has demonstrated that the next election in the state might be a straight fight between the A C N and the Labour party.
Though some observers are of the opinion that the process of selection of the candidate of the A C N is a task that may affect the fortune of the party in the next election, it remains a party that is growing fast in Ondo state. Therefore, to wave the threat of A C N with impunity when the crisis in the Labour party keeps escalating may spell doom for the Iroko party in the next election.
The Rocket editorial is of the opinion that the Labour party should as a matter of necessity resolve the intractable crisis in the party so as to fortify the party to be able to face the booming machinery of the broom party. Otherwise, like a harmful of flies, the A C N may wipe off the Labour Party from the surface of Ondo politics.
