Fuel subsidy removal: rescued fund will be abused – Segun Ojo |
Former commissioner for finance under Chief Adebayo Adefarati, Mr Segun Ojo has said that the rescued fund from the removal of the subsidy will be abused and embezzled by a few people who have access to it.
Mr Ojo, a gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria in a press statement made available to The Rocket newspaper on the current fuel subsidy said the decision of the president which according to him was supported by the state governors is evil and could only come from an irresponsible government. “No responsible government will withdraw subsidy without putting in place the needed infrastructure that will help cushion the backlash of such substantial increment in pump price”, he said.
He said the decision of Dr Mimiko to support the removal is at variance with the position of the majority of the people of Ondo state. Mr Segun said the actions of the governors are not as a result of genuine motive.
The statement reads in part: “The state governors support the removal of the subsidy simply because it will increase allocations that will be coming to their respective purses. in their usual habits, a dint of consideration was not given to the hardship Nigerians will face for such an action. Where they are supposed to represent, defend and protect us, they have remained selfish and self-centered as they have always been.
“As a citizen of Ondo state, I hold it a view that the support of Mr. Governor in favour of the removal of the fuel subsidy and his leading role in this direction in the south west, is contrary to the position of the people of Ondo state.
“While we are fighting for our right for decent treatment and living conditions we must demand for optimal utilisation of our resources and also kick against the excessive debt profile that the governor is erecting for the state through the N27 billion loan stock and N10 billion internal loan encumbrance that the state has been dragged into.
“Instead of removing the subsidy and give the money to the governors, the masses should be allowed to enjoy the single benefit that has come directly to them from our collective resources, otherwise we may have to contend with the Ondo state experience where N406 million were allegedly sent to wards by the government for Christmas merriment. Corruption in high places and not subsidy is the major problem.
“Let the government, both State and Federal, purge itself of unnecessary profligacy and avoidable expenses that have no economic benefit to the people.
“I support the strike action not primarily because the NLC called it but because it is the only way left to tell Mr President and the unrepentant governors that we are unhappy with the decision and to bring to his knowledge that our representatives are economical with the truth. If we must tighten our belts to develop as a nation the government must live by example. All the structures needed to bring succor to the masses must be in place and function effectively before contemplating the removal of fuel subsidy”.
